About the event
Multilingual students often struggle when academic content is taught separately from language instruction. Traditional EL pull-out or isolated language lessons may not support the complex vocabulary and discourse required in subjects like math, science, and social studies. This session addresses the challenge of integrating language development with rigorous academic content using Content-Based Instruction (CBI), a proven approach for promoting simultaneous content mastery and language acquisition in both EL and Dual Language classrooms.
Participants will explore how to design lessons that embed language objectives within core subject areas, making academic content more accessible to multilingual learners. They will collaborate on strategies to scaffold instruction without watering down rigor, learn how to build academic vocabulary in context, and walk away with ready-to-use tools to support language growth through rich, subject-specific learning experiences.
